Our classes are great classes full of kind-hearted and considerate children. We look after each other and celebrate everyone's achievements. Across the year, we will be working to develop our resilience and growth mindset, so that we approach all learning with a positive attitude and determination to succeed. We will always try our best and not be afraid of making mistakes as these help us to learn. It is going to be a busy but fun year for all the children in years 5 and 6.
Things to remember:
*Water bottles
*Reading books and reading records need to go between home and school every day
*Weekly spellings practice, to be tested each Friday
*Reading at home every evening
*Complete activities on TTRockstars

Writing
In class, this half term, we will be reading the book 'Who Let The Gods Out', which is linked to our History theme based around Ancient Greeks. The children will be using this as a stimulus for writing a range of texts including: their own narrative, information leaflets and poetry. In addition, we will continue to develop grammar and punctuation skills as these have a huge impact on improving the quality of our work.
Reading
Reading is so important which is why we encourage the children to read as often as possible. Each day, our class will engage in Sustained Silent Reading (SSR) giving the children the opportunity to read quietly for an extended period of time. Alongside this, all children read to an adult at least once a week. We use Accelerated Reader (AR) to assess children's reading comprehension and the children can also 'quiz' books that they have read. Guided reading takes place weekly and regular reading comprehension lessons occur. We refer to VIPERS when asking questions and checking for understanding and we teach pupils that questions usually fall into these categories. The questions in the grid below are great to use when your child reads to you at home too.
Spellings
New spellings will be given each Friday, to be tested the following Friday. A spelling list will be glued to the Reading Record Diary and a printed activity will be sent home. This will consist of spelling / handwriting practice, where we expect each word to be written twice after the printed word. On the reverse, there will be a word search activity. Your child should bring the completed spelling practice sheet by the next Friday.
The weekly spelling list can also be used for extra home learning activities, e.g. looking up the meaning of the words and using them in sentences.
Here are the Spelling Overviews for the year, as well as the spelling practice sheets and Word searches for this term, in case your child loses their copy. You will also find a document containing a list of suggestions for learning spellings at home.

Maths
This year, we will be following the Power Maths scheme (alongside White Rose) which is a mastery resource that empowers every child to understand and succeed. It develops growth mindsets and encourages hard work, practice and a willingness to see mistakes as learning tools. This term we will be focusing on place value, four operations and fractions. Besides this, we are continuing to use TTRockstars as a platform for helping children to learn and consolidate their knowledge of times tables and related division facts.
Science
This term our topic in Science is 'Electricity'. In order to develop our knowledge and understanding of this topic, we will be carrying out our own research and investigations involving building circuits and adapting these to test a range of hypotheses.
Connected Curriculum
Our focus this term is History - Ancient Greece. By the end of this unit, children will have an understanding of how our society was influenced by a civilisation in another country - Ancient Greece. Children should also gain an understanding of daily life in ancient Greece, including ideas, beliefs, attitudes and experiences of men, women and children. We will be comparing Athenians vs Sparta, looking at democracy and a study of Greek achievements and their influence on the western world. Alongside this, children will develop their understanding of the rise and fall of the civilisation. We shall be using this theme as a basis for our art activities.
