Meet the teacher
Our class is a great class full of kind-hearted and considerate children. We look after each other and celebrate everyone's achievements. Across the year, we will be working to develop our resilience and growth mindset, so that we approach all learning with a positive attitude and determination to succeed. We will always try our best and not be afraid of making mistakes as these help us to learn. It is going to be a busy but fun year for 6W.

Writing
In class, this half term, we will be reading the book 'The Goldfish Boy', which is linked to our PHSE theme based around mental health and well-being. The children will be using this as a stimulus for writing a range of texts including: their own narrative, information leaflets and poetry. In addition, we will continue to develop grammar and punctuation skills as these have a huge impact on improving the quality of our work.
Reading
Reading is so important which is why we encourage the children to read as often as possible. Each day, our class will engage in Sustained Silent Reading (SSR) giving the children the opportunity to read quietly for an extended period of time. Alongside this, all children read to an adult at least once a week. We use Accelerated Reader (AR) to assess children's reading comprehension and the children can also 'quiz' books that they have read. Guided reading takes place weekly and regular reading comprehension lessons occur. We refer to VIPERS when asking questions and checking for understanding and we teach pupils that questions usually fall into these categories. The questions in the grid below are great to use when your child reads to you at home too.
Maths
This year, we will be following the Power Maths scheme which is a mastery resource that empowers every child to understand and succeed. It develops growth mindsets and encourages hard work, practice and a willingness to see mistakes as learning tools. This term we will be focusing on percentages, measures and shape. Besides this, we are continuing to use TTRockstars as a platform for helping children to learn and consolidate their knowledge of times tables and related division facts.
Science
This term our topic in Science is 'Earth and Space'. In order to develop our knowledge and understanding of this topic, we will be carrying out our own research and investigations. The children are very engaged with this subject and are already intrigued by facts we have learnt so far about the Earth, Sun and Moon.
Connected Curriculum
Our focus this term is PSHE. We will be looking particularly at both mental and physical health and how we can support ourselves and the those around us with both. We have been using our Oracy skills a lot throughout this topic already, in particular working on being able to take on board other people's views and understand them if they differ to our own. 6W had a fascinating conversation/ debate about 'Which is more important; mental health or physical health?'; the discussion generated from this was very impressive and children supported their views with relevant information.
