Year 4 Multiplication Tables Check (MTC) – Information for Parents
The Multiplication Tables Check (MTC) is a statutory assessment for Year 4 pupils in England, designed to ensure children have a strong grasp of their times tables up to 12 × 12. This check is set by the Department for Education and usually takes place in June.
What is the purpose of the MTC?
The MTC helps to:
- Identify how well children know their multiplication tables.
- Highlight any areas where additional support might be needed.
- Build confidence and fluency in maths, which is essential for future learning.
How does the test work?
- The check is taken online, using a computer or tablet.
- It consists of 25 randomly generated times table questions.
- Each question must be answered within 6 seconds.
- The test lasts approximately 5 minutes in total.
- Results are for teachers to help support learning and are not published publicly.
How will we support Year 4 pupils?
Throughout the year, we will:
Daily Practice – Regular multiplication practice during maths lessons.
Engaging Activities – Fun games, challenges, and interactive quizzes.
Online Learning – Use of platforms like Times Tables Rock Stars and other digital tools.
Mock Tests – Low-pressure practice checks to build confidence and familiarity.
Rewards & Recognition – Celebrating progress to keep motivation high.
How can you help at home?
Encourage regular practice in short, fun bursts (e.g., 5-10 minutes a day).
Play multiplication games together (e.g., flashcards, board games).
Use online resources like Times Tables Rock Stars or BBC Bitesize.
Quiz them during everyday activities (e.g., car journeys, meal times).
By working together, we can ensure your child approaches the MTC with confidence and success! If you have any questions, feel free to get in touch.
Thank you for your support! 😊
