PSHE/RSE at Silver End Academy
Statement of Intent, Implementation and Impact
PSHE (Personal, Social, Health and Economic education) and RSE (Relationships Education and Relationships and Sex Education) are just one of the key tools we use at Silver End Academy to nurture healthy foundations for learning and personal success.
At Silver End Academy, we believe in providing our children with a holistic curriculum that promotes our school ethos, ‘Grow, Shine, Succeed’, that not only focuses on the children’s academic development, but their personal development too.
Intent – What do we hope to achieve with our PSHE/RSE curriculum?
Our intention for our children, is that regardless of their age, background, personal attributes, or abilities, they all are given the tools and knowledge to thrive as happy, healthy and safe individuals. We aspire for children to have an understanding of their own wellbeing, developing strategies to manage this independently. Alongside the children’s personal development, we also strive for our children to not only understand, but demonstrate actively our ‘Core Values’ amongst their peers and community. These are: kindness, curiosity, honesty, self-worth, responsibility, respect and perseverance.
Implementation – How will we deliver our PSHE/RSE curriculum?
In order to effectively implement our intended outcomes for our children, our PSHE curriculum has been tailored and adapted specifically for our school. We begin with using the SCARF scheme by Coram Education to form the foundation of our PSHE/RSE curriculum, also intertwined with the Kapow Primary wellbeing scheme in order to nurture the children’s understanding of their own wellbeing. Every half term, each class will also participate in a guided session linked specifically to the social and emotional needs of the class. Our curriculum has been crafted adapted to cover not only the statuary requirements for the subject, but to support our promotion of our ‘Core Values’ here at Silver End too.
Children are taught PSHE weekly within their class, lead by the Class Teacher or one of our Higher-Level Support Assistants. Our personalised curriculum has been designed so that there is a holistic balance of curriculum coverage and differentiated material for our own learners. Alongside our main curriculum, children are also frequently exposed to circle times to nurture a range of important topics such as bullying, diversity, British Values, environmental issues and mental health.
PSHE is very much explored practically at Silver End. We ensure that learning is embedded through a range of practical outcomes such as discussions, role play, team work, acts of service within the school community and physical wellbeing strategies.
Alongside our weekly curriculum, children are also given the opportunity the apply their PSHE learning through meaningful learning opportunities throughout the school year, for example National Mental Health Day where the children explored a range of strategies to support their own wellbeing.
Impact – What difference does our curriculum make within our children?
As a result of our carefully planned curriculum, children at our school are given the tools to understand and apply our core values and ethos at our school. Children understand the importance of PSHE, and how they can thrive in their personal development, and role within the school community. When discussing PSHE, our children say:
“We have to learn to keep safe.” (Year 1)
“It prepares you for things that you might not have gone through.” (Year 6)
“People get together to learn about friendship. It makes us feel better about ourselves.” (Year 3)
PSHE in continuously monitored and assessed to ensure that our curriculum continues to make a difference to our children.
