This term in English, we have been looking at Julia Donaldson and Mick Inkpen books. In particular the Snail and the Whale and Room on the Broom by Julia Donaldson, and The Blue Balloon and Kipper by Mick Inkpen.
The children have really enjoyed reading these stories! We described the characters using adjectives, re-told the stories by drawing our own story maps and even wrote a book review on our favourite of the 2.
In maths this term we are looking at counting in 2s, 5s, and 10s.
We have been using a game online called 'Splat 100 Square' so we can splat the numbers we think go next in our sequence. The children find it really funny when the board makes the splat noise!
To extend on our learning of counting in 2s, 5s and 10s, we have started to introduce multiplication and division in year 1, particularly by grouping and sharing objects.
The children have really enjoyed using objects in the classroom to show how we can make equal groups and then share these objects between those equal groups.
We are following a phonics scheme called 'Song of Sounds' this year. Every lesson we sing the 'sound song' which is how the children remember their sounds.
Each week we are learning the same sound but with multiple spellings. e.g. /ee/ bee, /ea/ beans, /e_e/ athlete and /y/ happy.
The children really enjoy our phonics lessons, especially our extended session where we play phonics games!
P.E is taught twice a week, once by our sports teacher, Mr Goodey, and once by the class teachers.
Queen's Park P.E days are Tuesday and Friday
Regents Park P.E days are Thursday and Friday
In P.E this term we have been looking at 'Outdoor and Adventure'.
Each week we set out on an adventure around the school!
We used a map of the school grounds and located all of the prominent features on the map.
The children really enjoyed finding these locations, as it meant they had a free run of the field!
After finding the locations they marked where they were on the map.
We also had a task to re-create the school hall using our P.E equipment.
The children had a very limited amount of equipment to used, but with their imaginations were able to create some wonderful replicas of the hall. Remembering where the benches were, the lunch tables go and even the doors.
As a challenge, they then had to re-create our classroom!
We have recently begun using a website called GoNoodle in class.
GoNoodle has some brilliant videos which promote movement and mindfullness where the children can dance, practise their balancing skills, have brain breaks and take part in short yoga sessions.
These videos have been a great help when we start to feel a little tired from working really hard!
This is one example of the many GoNoodle videos we use in class!
