Year 4 Multiplication Tables Check (MTC) – Information for Parents

The Multiplication Tables Check (MTC) is a statutory assessment for Year 4 pupils in England, designed to ensure children have a strong grasp of their times tables up to 12 × 12. This check is set by the Department for Education and usually takes place in June.

What is the purpose of the MTC?

The MTC helps to:

• Identify how well children know their multiplication tables.
• Highlight any areas where additional support might be needed.
• Build confidence and fluency in maths, which is essential for future learning.

How does the test work?

• The check is taken online, using a computer or tablet.
• It consists of 25 randomly generated times table questions.
• Each question must be answered within 6 seconds.
• The test lasts approximately 5 minutes in total.
• Results are for teachers to help support learning and are not published publicly.

Quiz them during everyday activities (e.g., car journeys, meal times).
