Art: Statement of Intent, Implementation, and Impact
Subject Leader: Miss La Veys
"The world always seems brighter when you’ve just made something that wasn’t there before." — Neil Gaiman
Intent
At Silver End Academy, we believe art is a way for children to explore and see the world in fun and exciting ways. Our goal is to help all pupils create imaginative and creative work. Throughout their time with us, children get the chance to explore their ideas, capture their experiences, and check out the work of others while exploring different creative ideas. They’ll become confident with a range of techniques and skills. By connecting art with other subjects, children will also get to know famous artists, designers, and makers.
Art is a great way for children to express themselves emotionally, which helps with their personal, social, and emotional growth. It also gives us a glimpse into how others view the world, helping us all understand our place in it.
Implementation
At Silver End Academy, we teach art using the full curriculum from Access Art.
You can find the progression of skills and which units they appear in the skills progression document.
Children keep their prep work in sketchbooks, which travel with them through the school. These act as both a working document for assessment and a way to track their progress. Art materials are organised school-wide and stored in a central area.
Along with formal art lessons, the children also take part in seasonal activities. Our whole-school Christmas art competition and annual ‘art’ day let children try a variety of art and craft styles.
While at Silver End Academy, all children will have the chance to take part in The Young Artists’ Summer Show by the Royal Academy of Arts and other cross country competitions/events.
Impact
By the time children leave Silver End Academy, they will have:
• Explored different art materials and learned how each one can be used for different things
• Experienced art from a range of artists, both historical and modern
• Asked questions about art, explored what interests them, and had the chance to learn more
• Shared their work with others and received recognition for their efforts
• Discovered that art includes many different styles and approaches, and that their thoughts about art—whether positive or negative—are important
Most importantly, they will understand that their ideas and expressions in response to art are what make their work uniquely theirs.
