At Silver End Academy, our English curriculum is designed to develop fluent, confident readers and writers who can communicate effectively, think critically, and engage with a wide range of texts. Following the Johnathan Bond scheme, we provide a rich and balanced programme that fosters a love of reading, strengthens language comprehension, and builds strong writing skills.
Our curriculum:
Prioritises systematic synthetic phonics (SSP) in the early years and Key Stage 1, ensuring secure decoding skills, in line with the DfE’s Reading Framework and evidence from the Education Endowment Foundation.
Builds reading fluency and comprehension through progressively challenging texts, promoting both reading for pleasure and academic success.
Develops pupils’ understanding of the English alphabetic code and phonics, underpinning reading and spelling proficiency.
Encourages the study of carefully sequenced literature, helping pupils appreciate literary craft, explore themes and genres, and make meaningful connections across texts.
Supports writing development through explicit teaching of grammar, vocabulary, and composition skills, enabling pupils to express ideas clearly and creatively.
Emphasises spoken language and discussion to deepen understanding and articulate ideas effectively.
Recognises that progression relies on incremental learning of curriculum content, not solely on final written outcomes or assessment results.
Provides targeted support to close gaps, ensuring all pupils—including disadvantaged and SEND children—make strong progress.
At Silver End Academy, we are committed to delivering a high-quality English education that equips pupils with the communication skills, literary knowledge, and cultural awareness they need to thrive in school and beyond.
