OPAL – Outdoor Play and Learning

Transforming Playtimes at Silver End Academy!

At Silver End Academy, we believe that play is an essential part of every child's learning, development and happiness.

We are delighted to have begun our exciting OPAL (Outdoor Play and Learning) journey, transforming our lunchtimes into opportunities for creativity, exploration, adventure and fun!

Through OPAL, we aim to provide every child with high-quality play experiences that encourage independence, imagination, teamwork and resilience.

    What is OPAL?

OPAL stands for Outdoor Play and Learning. It is an award-winning programme designed to improve the quality of play opportunities in primary schools.

Children spend a significant amount of their time at school playing, and we want to ensure that this time is as meaningful, enjoyable and enriching as possible.

Through OPAL, children are encouraged to explore, take appropriate risks, solve problems, build friendships and develop important life skills.

The programme supports schools in creating outdoor environments where children have the freedom to be creative, active, imaginative and adventurous.

    Our OPAL Journey

We are at the beginning of our OPAL journey, and we are already making exciting changes to our outdoor environment!

We have started introducing a variety of play zones across our school grounds, giving children more freedom to choose how they spend their lunchtimes.

Our aim is to create an inclusive, exciting and stimulating outdoor environment where every child can find something they enjoy.

    Our New Play Zones

    Digging Zone

Children can explore, investigate, dig and create using a range of tools and natural materials, encouraging curiosity, teamwork and imaginative play.

    Mud Kitchen Zone

Our mud kitchen provides opportunities for children to mix, create, experiment and use their imaginations through sensory and role play.

    Music Zone

Children can explore different sounds, rhythms and instruments, developing creativity and self-expression through music.

    Role Play Zone

An imaginative space where children can create their own stories, take on different characters and develop communication and social skills.

    Small World Zone

Children can create their own miniature worlds and adventures using figures, animals and other resources, encouraging storytelling and imaginative thinking.

    Water Play Zone

An opportunity for children to experiment, investigate and explore through water, developing problem-solving skills and curiosity.

    Gym Zone

A supervised area where children can develop their physical skills, coordination, strength and confidence through active play.

    More Exciting Developments to Come!

These zones are just the beginning of our OPAL journey!

We have many more exciting play opportunities and areas currently in development. As our project grows, we will continue to introduce new resources, equipment and spaces for children to enjoy.

We look forward to sharing these developments with our school community.

    Why Is Play Important?

Play is much more than simply having fun. It is an essential part of children's physical, emotional, social and cognitive development.

Through high-quality outdoor play, children have opportunities to:

    • Develop independence and confidence by making their own choices and exploring new experiences.

    • Build friendships and communication skills through collaborative and imaginative play.

    • Develop resilience and perseverance by overcoming challenges and trying new things.

    • Improve physical health and wellbeing through movement, exercise and outdoor exploration.

    • Develop creativity and imagination by inventing games, creating stories and exploring different materials.

    • Learn to manage appropriate risks by assessing situations, making decisions and developing responsibility.

    • Strengthen problem-solving and teamwork skills through shared challenges and experiences.

Most importantly, we want every child to feel happy, included and excited about their playtimes!

    Outdoor Play in All Weathers

At Silver End Academy, we believe children should have opportunities to enjoy outdoor play throughout the year.

Through OPAL, children will be able to access more of our outdoor environment, including grassy and muddy areas, during their playtimes.

To make this possible, all children need a clearly labelled pair of wellington boots that can remain in school.

Children should also have a suitable, clearly labelled coat in school each day, particularly during the colder and wetter months.

Having the appropriate clothing allows children to enjoy outdoor play while keeping their school shoes and clothing as clean and dry as possible.

If your family needs support with providing wellington boots, please speak to your child's class teacher.

    Learning Through Risk and Challenge

An important part of OPAL is helping children develop the skills to recognise, assess and manage appropriate risks.

We believe children benefit from opportunities to challenge themselves, explore their surroundings and develop confidence in their own abilities.

Our play team actively supervises the outdoor environment, supports children's play and helps them make safe and sensible decisions.

We aim to provide an environment that is safe enough for children to explore while still offering exciting opportunities for challenge, discovery and adventure.

    How Can Families Support OPAL?

Our OPAL journey is a whole-school community project, and we would love the support of our families!

As we continue developing our outdoor play spaces, we will be looking for donations of resources and loose parts that encourage imaginative, creative and adventurous play.

    These could include:

    • Pots, pans and kitchen utensils for our mud kitchen.

    • Dressing-up clothes and role-play accessories.

    • Small-world toys, animals and figures.

    • Buckets, containers and suitable gardening equipment.

    • Crates and other reusable materials.

    • Suitable outdoor play resources.

Loose parts are everyday objects and materials that children can move, combine, redesign and use in different ways during their play.

They encourage children to use their imaginations and create their own games and experiences.

We will regularly share updates about the resources we are looking for.

Please contact the school before bringing in donations, so we can check that items are suitable and safe for our play environment.

Every contribution, big or small, will help us continue transforming our outdoor spaces!

    Our OPAL Play Team

Our dedicated OPAL play team plays an important role in making our playtimes successful.

    The team works together to:

    • Support and encourage children's imaginative and independent play.

    • Supervise our different play zones.

    • Help children develop confidence and manage appropriate risks.

    • Encourage positive relationships and inclusive play.

    • Maintain and organise our play resources.

    • Ensure our outdoor environment remains welcoming, engaging and safe.

We are incredibly grateful to our staff for their enthusiasm, creativity and commitment to developing our OPAL provision.

Growing, Shining and Succeeding Through Play

Our OPAL journey reflects our school motto:

    Grow, Shine, Succeed.

Through play, our children are learning to grow in confidence, shine through their creativity and succeed by working together, overcoming challenges and discovering new skills.

We are excited to see how our outdoor environment continues to develop and the wonderful play experiences our children will enjoy.

This is only the beginning of our OPAL journey, and we look forward to sharing our progress with our families and wider school community.
