This half term in Piccadilly Circus
This half term we are basing our English work around the book Meerkat Mail. We will be looking at new vocabulary and how to expand our vocabulary knowledge. We will revisit the days of the week, learn conjunctions, different sentences types, hot seat Sunny (the Meerkat) and lots more! We will be writing a diary, letters and the story across the half term.
Ask your child to retell the story to you. See what actions they use and how they punctuate their sentences! J
Year 2: This half term we will be focusing on Multiplication and Division. We will be looking at making and sharing equal groups. We will be looking at repeated addition and building arrays to solve multiplication and division. We will then spend some time looking at 2D and 3D shapes.
This half term we will be finding out all about animals and their habitats. We will go on a microhabitat hunt around the school to find lots of mini-beasts. Linking to our Geography theme, we will be looking at the different animals from the 7 continents and take a look deep under the oceans. We will be thinking about the animals in their habitats and creating food chains.
This half term we will be learning to apply all our stage 3 sounds and alternative digraphs. We will continue to work on spelling tricky words and learning patterns to help us spell them. We will also learn about suffixes – ment, -ness, -ly, -ful and –less.
This half term we will continue to look at special places. We will be looking at Hinduism and special places to those of the Hindu faith, such as a Mandir (Hindu temple), a shrine at home and the River Ganges, especially in Varanasi, India. We will also be looking at Judaism and special places to those of the Jewish faith, such as Synagogues and the Western Wall in Jerusalem.
In Geography this half term we will be off on our travels around the world. We will be looking at the 7 continents and 5 oceans of our world. We will be learning about different countries in each of the continents. We will be listening to different music from each of the continents, studying art work from the continents and finding out lots of facts about them.
Have you been to a different country? Ask your child to find out what continent that country is in.

This week in maths we will be continuing to look at adding and subtracting two-2digit numbers. We are really enjoying our maths lessons recently and we are becoming much more independent in our lessons.
Maybe you could try and use these numbers to create your own + and - number sentences. Can you show how you have done this using the column method or a number line
56 23 44 12 83 92 45 61
This week in English we will be continuing to innovate the story of Jack and the Beanstalk. We have so far innovated the beginning and the middle and we will be then creating our own ending to the story. We have so far changed Jack to Rose. The giant to a monster and the hen and harp to a unicorn and a guitar.
We have finished learning all of the new Stage 3 sounds however each lesson we go back over our Stage 2 and Stage 3 song to continue to practise these sounds. This week will be learning some more tricky words.
Ask your child what makes a word tricky.
In Geography this week we are going to create Jack's town from Jack and the beanstalk and create a map and compass directions to show his town.

You may have seen some information regarding myON. myON personalises reading for the children by recommending books based on their interests, reading level, and ratings of books they've read . If they are not please let me know and I can sort out their details for you.

Reading: Year 2 children can still access Renaissance reading and complete quizzes on the books they have read, these do not have to be their current school books as they can access a whole library of quizzes for a variety of books that they might read.
Year 1 & 2 children you can sign up for free for Oxford Owl reading library (link) to access their extensive library.
Maths: Number and Place Value
Watch the Numberblock episodes linked below to give you some ideas on your activity
I would like you to create your own number booklet for numbers 1-20 (1-50 for Year 2) challenge: Year 1 up to 50 Year 2 up to 100
For each number you need to write the number as a digit- make sure that they are the correct way round, write the number as a word, create an + and - number sentence and draw this number- be as creative as you can
We have recently moved into a new year. We are now in 2021. At the start of each new year lots of people make New Years Resolutions. These are promises that people will try and follow throughout the coming year. They might be things like:
I would like you to think of a New Year’s resolution you can make. You could cut out a star shape and write your resolution and promise on this. Think of 2 New Year promises you could make. Something that you will try and do at home and something you will try and do at school.
Play this game and then practise copying out each word.
Ext: use a word from each column in a sentence
Find your favourite book or poem and share this with someone in your household.
Create a book review for someone in our class about your chosen book/poem
You need to tell them:
Why it is your favourite book
What is it about
Who is your favourite character and why
Why do you think they should read it
Draw a picture of your favourite character or part of the story/poem
In class we follow the 4R’s of learning:
Reciprocity means: two people or groups of people give each other help and advantages
In class this means helping each other and guide each other to improve our learning, At the beginning of the school year we chose an Octopus to represent this learning behaviour for our class. I would like you to think about how an Octopus might help the other animals within the ocean. They clean the coral for other fish and make it a cleaner environment.
Create a picture showing an octopus and some other sea creatures within the ocean. Make it as colourful as you can.

The last half term has gone really quickly. The children have settled in really well and are becoming more independent in their learning and how they come into school each day. As we approach the Half Term break, I hope you all have a safe half term and I thought you might like to see some of the learning we have done over the past few weeks.
We have recently built toy cars using plastic water bottles and bottle lids. The children had great fun building the cars and then testing them out in the playground.
We have also been carrying out some science experiments. We placed 5 eggs into different liquids to see what affect they would have on the shells. We were looking to find out the affect different liquids would have on our teeth. We were very surprised that the vinegar made the egg grow and becoming bouncy and squishy. We then wondered if the colour of the fizzy drink would affect the egg so we have set another experiment to find this out.
Have a safe Half Term Break

A quick reading update from me:
We have had a few questions regarding reading, quizzes and levels.
The children have all been assessed on Renaissance Reading and the Phonics screening check. We have then given them a reading points range that matches these assessments and the children will choose a book within this range.
Due to the fact that we cannot use reading diaries at the moment we are doing our best to change reading books when needed. The children complete a short comprehension quiz based on their book. We endeavour to quiz and change books when needed. There maybe some days when this might not be possible.
Some books will have both a reading colour and a points range. E.G Yellow and 1.6 We are basing their book choices on the points range not the colour.
When the children have completed the book with you at home they can log onto the link below and complete the comprehension quiz (Accelerated Reader) we can then access this and change their book. If you would like the children's log in details to complete this please let us know.
Thank you for your continued support.
Here is the web link to access the website:
Children need to log in and click on the Accelerated reader button (its orange), they then type in the quiz number (inside the book cover) and once they have searched for the book they click 'take quiz'.
Thank you for your continued support
