If you have any questions about any of the tasks set below, you can contact me using the above e-mail address. I will keep a check on e-mails between 8.00 and 4.30 from Monday to Friday each week and will respond to you as soon as possible.
I hope you are enjoying a bright and sunny half term - we have certainly been very lucky with the weather lately!😎
Here is an update of how our learning will look after half term. As you are aware, children in some year groups (including Year 6) will be returning to school from Monday 1st June. Year 6 will be in school on Tuesday and Wednesday, so obviously I will be teaching on these two days, and I am also going to be in school on one other day each week. Online learning, which has supported home-schooling over the last few weeks, remains incredibly important to us and, therefore, we will continue to set tasks in a similar way. As you can hopefully understand though, my time in school will make it a bit more difficult for me to respond to online learning on a daily basis, but I will reply as soon as I can. We are planning to still set a few bits of work on Purple Mash (reading and spellings only) but would like to encourage you to follow the BBC Bitesize and Oak National Academy daily lessons (which cover all subjects), alongside the White Rose Maths activities (links to weekly downloads will be added further down this page as usual), all of which you may well have been using already.
Please continue to email me using the class email (SilverCharing@connectedlearningmat.co.uk) if you have any queries relating to your child's learning or to send me work that they have been doing at home. The children can still contact me using 2Email via Purple Mash. Phone calls home will continue so that we can offer support with work as needed.
I look forward to speaking on the phone to those of you who are continuing to learn from home and I look forward to seeing those of you who are joining us next week in school.
Thank you for your support.
Hello Charing Cross!
I hope you are having a lovely bank holiday Monday and enjoying the sunshine
This week is half-term and therefore I am not expecting you to be doing any work for school. Having said this, I do know that some of you still enjoy having access to activities, so I have continued to set tasks for you to try on Purple Mash, if you wish. I shall be checking work (and emails) every day, as usual, and will respond to you as soon as I can.
Look after yourselves and have a great week.
WHITE ROSE MATHS ACTIVITIES (Added on 11.5.20)
We are letting you know that White Rose have removed parental access to the worksheets/ practice questions on their website (you can still watch the video tutorials) so we are going to add links to the daily activities on our class pages, which means that you can continue to use these with your children. BBC Bitesize also have daily lessons with alternative/ supplementary activities that are also very good and well worth trying if you haven't already.
SATs Week!!! (Added on 10.5.20)
As explained in our email to the children on Purple Mash, this week would have been SATs week so we are adding links to last year's SATs papers if anyone fancies having a go!! Have fun!
Join us on Friday 8 May as we pay tribute to the service and sacrifice of the entire Second World War generation, from British, Commonwealth and Allied Forces to evacuees and those who served on the home front. As we face some of the most challenging times since the end of the Second World War, now more than ever it is important to unite in recognition of service to the nation, just as communities did 75 years ago.
There are many parallels between the struggles of the Second World War and what we are going through today. We look to our Second World War generation to learn from their experiences, and we continue our work to protect them from the threat we currently face.
With members of the public unable to attend VE Day 75 events, The Royal British Legion is playing a central role in the delivery of a range of remote activity, including:
Links to these events and activities are below.
Essex Child and Family Wellbeing Service
Weekly Schools PSHE Challenge
Each week we will be setting school children a challenge linked to the PSHE curriculum to support wellbeing. Each challenge will be delivered as a question we want your pupils to consider and answer using a range of different ways eg. poster, artwork, story, comic strip, newspaper report, mind map or power point presentation.
If it is possible for you do so, you could attach your work to an email in Purple Mash and send it to me (Miss Wright).
Challenge 1 (wb 27.4.20)
Managing feelings and emotions
What can we do to help ourselves relax and stay calm?
Explore different ways/strategies to relax your body and stay calm
To learn strategies to manage feelings of anxiety
Identify ways to help us feel better when we experience strong emotions
DAILY LESSONS FOR YEAR 6 (Added on 22.4.20)
Backed by Government grant funding, Oak National Academy have launched a brand-new enterprise, which has been created by 40 teachers from some of the leading schools across England. It provides 180 video lessons each week, across a broad range of subjects from maths to art to languages, for every year group from Reception through to Year 10. From next Monday (27.4.20), we will be adding daily lessons to this page for the children to participate in - there will be tasks for them to complete as part of each lesson.
It is important that the children also continue to work through the activities we are setting on Purple Mash and they can use the email programme (2Email) as part of this to attach any additional work that they would like us to see.
During this unusual time, and with no imminent return to school date, we are very aware that you will be trying to juggle lots of things at the moment, which is why we are trying to provide you with resources that hopefully you find useful/ helpful and we think will benefit our Year 6 in their learning journey until we reopen.
Thank you for your support.
Look after yourselves.
Mrs Smith and Miss Wright
Hello Charing Cross and parents - welcome to the summer term!! I hope you have all had a lovely Easter break, albeit a little bit different to normal, and managed to find some time for relaxing! The weather has been very kind to us and the sun continues to shine, which is good news. I will keep adding any useful websites/ documents to this class page (and some not so useful, but hopefully interesting or amusing!) as and when I find them. As before the holidays, I will keep setting work, to be completed daily, on Purple Mash (all children have their login details to access this) and please remember that there are some excellent maths resources on White Rose (see link for both of these below). Year 6, make sure you are reading regularly and practising those times tables on TT Rockstars. Also, I hope you are keeping up your Joe Wicks daily workout and finding some great outfits for 'Fancy Dress Fridays'!!!
Take care everyone and keep up the good work.
Look forward to seeing you all soon hopefully.
MARVELLOUS and MUSICAL (19.4.20)
Join David Walliams for a marvellous musical journey and meet some of the great classical composers along the way – from the 19th-century heart throb Franz Liszt to the famously grumpy Ludwig van Beethoven. The 'Marvellous Musical Podcasts' are aimed at everyone aged 1 to one hundred thousand - they are well worth a listen. Hope you enjoy!
USEFUL RESOURCE (7.4.20)
Thought these suggestions were really good - some might need adapting for Year 6 but useful as a starting point. Enjoy!
EASTER TREATS (6.4.20)
Thought you might enjoy making some of the following as they look fantastic. I appreciate that they are not promoting healthy eating but, like the title of this section suggests, they are little 'treats' and I think we all deserve one of those every now and then!!
Hope you have all had a good week and managed to keep yourselves busy both mentally and physically. Thank you and well done to all of you who have been working hard to complete activities on Purple Mash. Although it is the Easter holidays between 6/4/20 - 17/4/20, I will still be setting work on Purple Mash and uploading any other useful websites, as you may well find them helpful for filling a bit of time over the next couple of weeks. Make sure you keep yourselves busy Year 6 and look after those around you - you could always offer to help with jobs around the house, weed the garden or even bake a huge chocolate cake!
OUT OF THIS WORLD RESOURCES (Added on 2.4.20)
Came across this set of resources produced by NASA and thought it looked interesting - lots of different elements to the website so make sure you have a good look.
MORE RESOURCES (Added on 30/3/20)
Bitesize is designed to make learning engaging and fun for children of all ages! Their educational content includes videos, activities, quizzes and games to help you with learning and revision. I noticed that they are advertising the following, which should be good and well worth a look.
Bitesize Daily will run from April 2020 to bring a special daily lesson in English, maths and other core subjects to children and young people across the UK, who are learning at home during school closures.
MORE NEW RESOURCES (Added on 28/3/20)
Good quality Maths and English resources can be found by clicking on the following link. There are daily activities for both Maths and English.
The following website has excellent maths resources to support the children's learning. There is a mixture of: fluency, reasoning and problem solving activities for them to try; we use these resources at school so the children are very familiar with these types of questions.
Hello everyone! Well, we are on day 3 of our new 'learning from home' routine, which I hope is going well for you all. It is very strange not seeing my fantastic pupils everyday but I hope you are all keeping well and regularly exercising both body and mind as this is very important.
Well done and thank you to all of you who have been completing activities on Purple Mash - keep up the good work! I have uploaded a couple of French activities from Mrs Anderton which your child should be able to find in their 'Work' section of Purple Mash. I hope you can access the documents as I have never uploaded to there before! Also, I believe that if your child wants to upload a document from 'Word' or a powerpoint presentation for me to see, they can do this by going to their 'Work' area and selecting 'My Work' then clicking on the upload button, which enables them to select a document to add. Good luck!!!
I am hoping that all of Charing Cross have been doing PE with Joe Wicks everyday at
9am (YouTube) - I have and it is really enjoyable, although my legs are aching a little bit!! Also, there are dance lessons on Facebook apparently with Oti Mabuse (from Strictly Come Dancing) which should be good fun.
Carol Vorderman is offering Maths lessons/ support/ activities at https://www.themathsfactor.com/ which look really good. You can sign up for free at the moment although there are a few technical problems with this as demand is high. You can still access topics and games on there in the meantime.
David Walliams is releasing one audio story each day for 30 days which will no doubt be very entertaining. He has called it 'Elevenses with The World of David Walliams'
Anyway, that's all for now. Look after yourselves and keep busy.
Work/ Activities During the School Closure
Sadly, as you are aware, from the end of Friday, schools will be closed to most pupils. In preparation for an unknown period of time away from school, we thought it was important for your children to keep their minds busy and active. To help with this, the children have brought home some Reading, GS&P and Maths packs, which are designed to be 10 minute bitesize challenges to be completed across ten days. We have also added a selection of different resources/ activities to this page. Although a lot of these appear to be SATs related, we have always been mindful of preparing the children for secondary school, which all of these tasks will support. In addition to this, we have included several useful websites - the children have been given logins for TT Rockstars and Purple Mash. There are lots of really good interactive resources on Purple Mash linked to all areas of the curriculum - we will be setting tasks daily in the '2do' section for children to complete. Besides this, in class, the children have been working on their Stage 3 Connected Curriculum projects, which involves producing documents, articles, quizzes and reports for their own version of the 'National Geographic Kids magazine'. We have attached a copy of these tasks so that children can continue to work on these at home.
We hope you stay well and look forward to seeing you soon when schools are back up and running.
Victorian Christmas - School Trip
Monday 2nd December 2019
We are looking forward to our school trip linked to the theme of The Victorians. Your child is encouraged to dress in traditional Victorian costume for this day. Below are some simple ideas for an outfit so that this doesn't become too stressful or expensive!!
We had a really enjoyable day at the Royal Gunpowder Mills celebrating a Victorian Christmas. Here are a few photos showing what we got up to:
Every week at school we hold a reading raffle where the children can win a prize if their name is drawn out. To gain raffle tickets for this draw, children have to have read at home and had their reading record signed by an adult; the more they read (which hopefully is at least once everyday), the more chance they have of winning!! Also, we have a 'Top Reader of the Half Term' award, which recognises the child who has read most at home - children who achieve this are able to choose a book as their prize.
