6WB - Year 6
Welcome to 6WB!
Class Teacher: Mrs Whittaker-Brown
LSA: Mrs White
In 6WB we are hardworking, conscientious and determined. We strive to be kind, friendly and considerate to each other to ensure that the classroom is a positive and enjoyable environment.
This term we will be working hard to develop our Growth Mindsets and as a result adopt a positive approach to all our endeavours and learning. We will embed this mindset throughout Year 6, our time at Silver End Academy and our lives.
Things to remember:
*PE days - Tuesdays
*Water bottles
*Reading books and reading records need to go between home and school every day
*Weekly spelling quiz to complete on Purple Mash
*Reading at home every evening
*Order snack in advance
Maths
In Maths, we are starting to use Power Maths. Power Maths is a UK curriculum mastery programme designed to spark curiosity and excitement and nurture confidence in maths, well linked to the developing of a positive growth mindset using fun characters.
This term we are focusing on both decimals and percentages in the build up to SATs in May. Through the Power Maths scheme the children are exposed to reasoning style questions daily which should build their confidence when it comes to the reasoning SATs paper. We are also completing an arithmetic lesson once a week to work on strategies and efficient methods when answering questions.
English
In English, we will be focusing on the truly engaging 'The Goldfish Boy’. Using this book as a hook, we will write a short story, an informative piece amongst other things. Throughout lessons, we will be learning a range of new skills to improve our writing, such as: punctuating speech, expanded noun phrases, planning writing and using a range subordinate conjunction. The children are already extremely hooked by our new book and we are only 3 chapters in!
Reading at Home
Children are encouraged to read daily and record comments in their Reading Diary. Pupils who have read at home and have had records signed by and adult will receive raffle tickets to be entered into a draw to win a prize each week. Every child in the class is heard read at least twice a week, with a short discussion about what they have read. The children read individually as well as in guided reading sessions. During these sessions we explore a text in greater detail and practice/apply their reading skills, now known as VIPERS. Please use these to support your child when reading with them.
Grammar
Science
This half term our topic in Science is Earth and Space. The children are extremely interested in this topic and we have already gathered some fantastic knowledge which they have shared within our first few sessions. Throughout the topic we will look at the difference between heliocentric and geocentric approaches to the solar system, important people within the field of astrology and much more.
For the rest of the year we will be looking at:
Spring 1 - Earth and Space
Spring 2 - Earth and Space
Summer 1 - Living things and their habitats
Summer 2 - Animals including humans
Connected Curriculum
Our focus this term is PSHE. We will be looking particularly at both mental and physical health and how we can support ourselves and the those around us with both. We have been using our Oracy skills a lot throughout this topic and working on being able to take on other people views and understand them if they differ to our own. So far I have been extremely impressed with 6WB at how sensible they have been when discussing some of the topics we have covered. We had a fantastic debate with the focus of 'Which is more important; mental health or physical health?'
